Action to tackle FM’s demographic timebomb

The Talent Management and Higher Level Skills projects will roll out methods of nurturing workforce skills that have worked successfully in other industries. Research carried out by Asset Skills shows 51% of facilities managers are aged over 45 and a further 52% aim to retire between 55 and 65 years.

“If this trend continues it’ll mean a significant loss of skills and experience to a relatively new industry,” said Sarah Bentley, Chief Executive of Asset Skills. “FM is sitting on a succession-planning nightmare and we are drawing on the best models to help employers foster young talent to start replacing the experience that will be lost over the next decade.”

The Higher Level Skills project is bringing together FM and education like never before with work placements being arranged not just for undergraduates but also for university and college tutors.

“This programme encourages more undergraduates to take up work placements in FM part of their education,” said Bentley. “There is no doubt the number of experienced people leaving FM presents a challenge but it is not too late for action.”
